Lara at crossroads
THE EDITOR: West Indies has lost the Test series and somebody is happy! The same individual who criticised the match saving tactics of Mervyn Dillon and Dinanath Ramnarine against South Africa three years ago made mention of England as his favourite team in the same breath! This sacred cow came on a radio programme to criticise the present West Indies captain when he chose to take an important time out from the local games. This is something people can conveniently forget. I could not help paying attention to the look on Viv Richards’ face as the regional side faced the barrel of a gun at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
There is the concern of the Chairman of the West Indies panel of selectors making overseas tours in recent times and one wonders if this would not fall on deaf ears this time around. With this trend in losing the “Whispering Death” in Mike Holding is snorting Lara out of the captaincy, something only the left hander can choose to do as he did the first time around by resigning. Rev Wes Hall can still strive to influence Lara into accepting another life as a matter of solace.
What the former double record holder is undergoing is a proverbial cutting by a wet paper! He is certainly at the crossroads!
