Jack encouraged by coaches
CONCACAF President Jack Warner has expressed his joy at the turnout of participants at the CONCACAF “C” Licence Coaching Course, which began at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Tunapuna on Sunday. The week-long course will end tomorrow with the 53 coaches gaining insights in both the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching, including systems of play, depth in defence, attacking methods, set plays, Laws of the game and planning coaching sessions.
According to Warner, who also holds the portfolio of FIFA Vice-President, “it is very encouraging to see so many coaches in attendance. It shows a high level of commitment and a desire to upgrade your coaching skills and your technical knowledge.” The course is being conducted by Alvin Corneal, the former national player and coach, and now currently a FIFA instructor. Warner called on the coaches to recognise their role in society-life. “It is important that coaches are trained properly because an untrained coach can do untold damage to the young footballer,” said the famed football administrator.
“Apart from teaching technical skills, the coach today is often the only person that the youngster will listen to. Therefore you all have a duty to ensure that, in addition to the various skills, you also teach our young footballers about the importance of self-discipline, respect for others and teamwork.” But Warner bemoaned the lack of coaches from the Secondary Schools League in the week-long programme, stressing “that is where a lot of coaching development is required.”
