Keep asking questions, Kevin
THE EDITOR: I am writing this letter in response to Kevin Baldeosingh’s article published on Friday April 9, 2004 entitled, “Bible Brains.” It is quite obvious that Mr Baldeosingh is determined to do whatever it takes to prove that the God of the Bible does not exist. Mr Baldeosingh, I do not believe that you are a fool, however I do believe that you are being misled. The points that you made in your article are very weak and show your lack of understanding (I mean that in the most respectful way) and your refusal to study God’s word with an open mind. You said in your article that, “the bible specifically warns people about thinking: For in much wisdom there is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow” (Ecclesiastes 1:18).
This verse of scripture does not forbid Christians to increase in knowledge and intellectual understanding because the bible clearly states in Proverbs 4:5, “Get wisdom! Get understanding!” It is intellectually dishonest to take one verse of scripture out of the Bible and attempt to interpret it without studying the whole counsel of scripture. In your article you asked the question, “If God is omniscient, how come he didn’t know where Adam was after the latter had eaten the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge?” This again proves that your heart is hardened against the truth. This question that God asked Adam was a rhetorical one.
Whenever God asks a question he is never looking for information because he already knows. God’s purpose for asking this question was that he wanted Adam to examine himself and realise what a terrible thing he had done. So I ask you, “Why do you refuse to believe the truth?” The Bible says, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” You claim to be a man of facts and logic, but you have yet to make any logical arguments that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Bible is not factually correct, for example, it is mentioned in your article that Abraham “probably” never existed. I need to let you know that Christianity is a faith that is based on facts. Clark Pinnock asserts, “The facts backing the Christian claim are not a special kind of religious fact. They are the cognitive, informational facts upon which all historical, legal, and ordinary decisions are based.”
I must say that I believe that it is healthy to have doubts about God’s word because doubt leads to inquiry and inquiry leads to truth and I hope that your doubts will some day lead you to accept the truth. All of the points that were made in your article are philosophical, according to the tradition of mankind, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ (Colossians 2:8). Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that you are determined to do whatever it takes to prove that the word of God is false. It is my prayer that you would open your heart to the knowledge of the truth. God bless you richly.
