Tobago Primary School Games in spotlight on Thursday, Friday

ASPIRING Tobago primary school athletes will don their spikes for this year’s Penny Savers-sponsored Tobago Primary Schools Athletics Champion-ships (TPSAC) on Thursday and Friday. The young schoolboy and schoolgirl athletes will vie for honours first in field events at Shaw Park, and next day they will converge on the Dwight Yorke Stadium for track action. Winners of the various events automatically earn selection on the Tobago team for the National Primary Schools Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on May 19.


Zone champion schools are Patience Hill Government, Buccoo Government, Bethesda Government, Montgomery Government, St Patrick’s AC, Whim AC, Signal Hill Government, Black Rock Government and Plymouth AC. According to TPSAC committee chairman Lester Alleyne, Chief Secretary and Secretary for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Orville London will take the salute at a march past to start the championships along with the chairman of the National Primary Schools Track and Field Committee and a representative of the Division of Education.


Phyllis Armstrong will also be honoured for her long and dedicated service to Tobago primary schools athletics. Added to the action on April 22 and 23, there will be a divisional 3k on April 27 from the Auchenskeoch intersection to Shaw Park along Milford Road, starting at 2 pm. Winner of this event will carry the Tobago pennant in the National 3k final to be held on May 2. Previous stars of the Tobago Games have been 13-15 Girls - Apri Job (Belle Garden AC), Alicia Baptiste (Patience Hill Gov); 13-15 Boys - Jamoul Sandy (Plymouth AC), Elle Hercules (St Andrew’s AC); 11-13 Girls - O’Chea Cyrus (Bethesda Gov); 11-13 Boys - Rondel Sandy (Roxborough AC); 9-11 - Girls - Shanice Roachford (Scarobrough Methodist); 9-11 Boys - Hay Sean Cowie-Clarke (Scarborough Methodist).
