Latapy, Sam hit mark for UK teams
LONDON: Three footballers with Caribbean connections were on target, while another was given marching orders in British football action on Saturday. Former Jamaica international Paul Hall, as well as Trinidad and Tobago-born stars Hector Sam and Russell Latapy, all found the nets for their clubs. At Layer Road Ground, Sam and Wrexham crashed to their fourth successive away defeat as they lost 3-1 at the hands of Colchester. Gareth Williams fired Colchester ahead on the quarter-hour mark, but their lead lasted just two minutes as Sam headed home Dennis Lawrence’s cross. Colchester restored their lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to defender Greg Halford and substitute Scott McGleish sealed the issue later.
At Glebe Park in Scotland, Falkirk picked up three points with a narrow 1-0 victory over Scottish Division 1 bottom side Brechin. The goal came after 68 minutes when Latapy hit a brilliant first-time shot into the net from 25 yards following a corner from Craig McPherson. Elsewhere, both Plymouth Argyle and Oldham Athletic finished with 10 men as Argyle’s Paul Wotton and Oldham’s Jamaican connection Jermaine Johnson were both ejected for two bookable offences. Oldham left stuttering league leaders Plymouth without an away win in three matches to ease their own relegation fears with a crushing 4-1 victory.
