Las Lomas n-ballers stun Defence Force
SISSONS Las Lomas scored a stunning upset in the Angela “Pinky” Drayton-Thomas “A1” Division of the Port of Spain netball League, when they squeaked past Defence Force 44-43. The match on Saturday at the Lystra Lewis Courts, Princes Building, saw the Las Lomas girls ahead 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Defence Force shot into a 25-20 halftime advantage. At the end of the third period, the Army-Coast Guard squad still led 35-24, but Las Lomas turned in a spirited final quarter to just overtake their opponents and snatch the victory.
Racquel Russell scored 32 goals from 51 attempts and Ayanna Russell 12 of 17 for the winners, while Kerlene Sylvester got 36 goals from 53 attempts and Donna Chase seven of ten for Defence Force. In the only Pearl Francis Championship Division match, Police whipped Arima United 57-44, despite a 40-goal burst from national goal-shoot Janelle Barker. Tessa Brathwaite got the other four goals. The policewomen held sway throughout 18-6, 30-19, 44-32 at the intervals with Beverly Hernandez scoring 35 of 47 attempts, Allison Matthews had 13 of 17 and Euphemia Huggins put in nine of 14.
