Be careful when receiving gifts

THE EDITOR: Now that the Crowne Plaza-Spiritual Baptist matter has died down, we in the National Alliance for Reconstruction would like to make some closing remarks. Firstly, if this matter did not take the turn it did, the Nation would not have known that the Solid Waste Manage-ment Co Ltd (SWMCOL) had undertaken this expense.

More importantly, can SWMCOL, being a totally owned government company, and spending taxpayers’ money, legally make this type of expenditure? Is it authorised in the objects of the Company? Secondly, the Spiritual Baptists are perhaps the closest to what may be described as an indigenous religion.

The NAR believes that the Spiritual Baptists are the anchor of spirituality in our society, an achievement for which they fought very hard. As such, the Baptists should be very careful from whom they receive gifts for fear of compromising their hard fought gains and respect.
