Police, Army netballers dominate
POLICE and arch-rivals Defence Force continued their dominating form in the Pearl Francis Championship Division of the Port-of-Spain Netball League. Both teams were stretched before securing their victories on Saturday at the Lystra Lewis Courts, Princes Building ground. The Policewomen led 11-5; 17-11; 30-22 at the quarter stages of their match against Mucurapo Ex-Pupils, and held off a determined final quarter rally for a 40-35 victory. Allison Mathews scored 36 of 46 attempts and Peggy Ann Brown four of eight for the defending champions, while Joel Young had 25 of 37 and Simone Morgan 10 of 20 for Ex-Pupils.
Unbeaten Defence Force triumphed over Soul City 36-31, leading 8-4, 15-14, 28-21 at the intervals. Anastascia Wilson scored 26 of 34 attempts and Dianna Pierre netted 10 of 14 attempts for the Army-Coast Guard women, while Soul City got 17 of 30 attempts from Adasha Norton and 14 of 22 from Tricia Liverpool. Malta Carib Senators edged Defence Force 37-35 in their Angela “Pinky” Drayton-Thomas “A1” Division match, also on Saturday. Goal-attack Ayanna Moore scored 23 of 32 attempts and Sheryl Farris sank 14 of 22 for Senators. Karlen Sylvester had 28 of 45 and Donna Chase got seven of 14 for Defence Force.
Senators led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, but Defence Force wrested the lead 21-18 at the half-time interval. The Army-Coast Guard women held the advantage 30-26 at the end of the third stanza, but Senators would not be denied.
