Forgive and forget Mr Kambon
THE EDITOR: Chairman of the Emancipation Support Commit-tee, Khafra Kambon, remains disturbed that CONCACAF officials considered and actually agreed to toast Mr Nelson Mandela at the Trinidad Country Club. Kambon further stated that his committee was deeply troubled as were many people in our nation at the decision to announce holding such a function at the notorious club. While this writer understands and appreciates Mr Kambon’s concern, he may have also missed out on a glorious opportunity to indicate to the rest of the world that “Trinbagonians” are ahead of others when it comes to “ethnic togetherness.”
Mr Kambon is reminded that Mr Mandela himself may have “forgiven” and “forgotten” although the pain and anguish of that unfortunate apartheid era may never be easily erased. The Emancipation Committee continues to be a very effective organisation in every positive sense, particularly in the area of culture and their efforts deserve all worthy commendation and recognition. However the ugly past is behind us and ought not to be revisited in the name of peace and progress. We must allow the healing process to continue while this country can ill afford any “division” of its people today, tomorrow, never! Let’s all welcome Mr Mandela “The Living Legend” with love and afford him the glorious opportunity to address our people of every colour, creed and race. Only then will we find an equal place.
