Rougier keeps Bristol in chase

LONDON: Former Trinidad and Tobago international football captain Tony Rougier scored on Sunday and helped Bristol City beat Barnsley 1-0 in the English Second Division. Third-placed Bristol City kept alive their automatic promotion hopes with the result, thanks to Rougier’s goal midway through the first half. Christian Roberts headed on to Rougier who held off Steve Hayward inside the area before firing hard and low past Gavin Ward into the corner of the net in the 21st minute.

City should have extended their lead when Louis Carey squared the ball to Tommy Doherty, but he shot narrowly wide. The home side had Antony Kay sent off five minutes from time when he received his second booking for a foul on Leroy Lita. The win, Bristol’s 22nd of the season, pushed them up to 79 points, trailing leaders Plymouth (87) and Queen’s Park Rangers (80) in the standings.
