TT women cricketers confident in Caribbean Championship

Title-holders Trinidad and Tobago will tackle St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) when the 2004 West Indies Women’s Cricket Federation (WIWCF) championship opens with three matches today. TT face SVG at Munroe Road, while in other matches, St Lucia meet Grenada at Queen’s Park Oval, and returning Barbados play Guyana at Barataria. Barbados are back in the tournament for the first time in over 20 years. Last year, Trinidad and Tobago broke the six-year stranglehold St Lucia had on the league title, and also copped the limited overs crown to complete the double.

The TT captain Stephanie Power, who is also the West Indies captain, is confident that they will be able to retain both titles.  “We have five TT players recently came back from the (West Indies) tour of Pakistan and India so we are bringing a wealth of experience into the Trinidad and Tobago team and we expect to regain the two trophies,” Power told CMC Radio News and Sport.  Though confident, Power conceded that the St Lucians are worthy challengers, especially with in form left-handed batter Nadine George, the first West Indies woman to score a century in Tests, achieving the mark against Pakistan in March. “We know that she (Nadine George) will be a threat and the captain Verena Felicien, but we are confident that we can overcome them,” said Power, who is joined by Nelly Williams, Anisa Moha-mmed, Envis Williams, and Felicia Cummings as West Indies players in the TT unit.
