Hutson, De Verteuil star at Hampton

DESPITE the customary poor turnout of spectators and a protracted schedule, the 30th annual Hampton International Games was staged at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo over the weekend. National junior athletes Wanda Hutson and Denele De Verteuil both collected gold medals, in the respective women’s 200 metres and 800 metres on Sunday to cap off outstanding performances. Hutson, representing Memphis Pioneers, cruised to victory in the women’s half-lap in a time of 23.36 seconds, ahead of St Vincent’s Kineke Alexander 24.28 and fellow Memphis sprinter Monique Cabral 24.50.

De Verteuil of Phoenix and dreadlocked Pilar McShine of Success were head to head throughout the two-lap race, with De Verteuil using her experience to good effect, as she won in two minutes 14.13 seconds. McShine was next in 2:14.65 and Janelle Clarke of Petrotrin placed third in 2:22.12. The men’s 200m gold medal went to Guyanese Rawle Greene, who crossed the finish line in 21.45, ahead of Phoenix’s Kherry Noray 21.47 and Silver Fox’s Keith Roberts (21.79). Carlan Arthur of Morvant Jets needed a photofinish to claim the men’s mile in four minutes 25.57 seconds, with Palo Seco’s Nigel Phillip second (with the same time as Arthur) and Colm Mercurius of Police Track Club, Guyana third in 4:25.88. Burnley’s Annie Alexander was an easy winner in the women’s shot put, throwing a distance of 13.96 metres, followed by clubmate Jodie Sutherland 11.06m and Grenada’s Rhonda Henry (10.32m). Antiguan long distance queen Janil Williams ran away with the women’s 3,000m in 10:49.90, with the Success’ pair of Shermain Le Saldo 10:55.64 and Kema McShine 11:02.59 trailing.
