Police get big netball scare

CHAMPIONS Police got a big scare from Soul City before winning 41-34 in the Pearl Francis Championship Division of the Port-of-Spain Netball League. The Soul City girls held Police 7-7 at the end of the opening quarter, but the policewomen picked up their game to lead 18-14 at half time. And they increased their lead to 27-22 in the third period before going on to victory. Donna Charles scored 27 of 37 attempts, Beverly Hernandez had 11 of 22 and Allison Matthews got three of six for the winners. Adesha Norton led Soul City with 14 goals from 24 attempts, Sonia Jack got 10 of 11, Debra Beckles had six of 15 and Tricia Liverpool scored four of five.

Sissons Las Lomas won a thriller over Malta Carib Senators 37-36 in the Angela “Pinky” Drayton-Thomas “A1” Division, after trailing for three quarters. Senators led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the Las Lomas girls outscored them 14-8 to end the half trailing by just one goal 21-20. From then the action escalated but Senators still held their one-goal advantage at the three-quarter stage 29-28. But despite good shooting by Ayanna Moore, Senators saw their rivals inch past them for victory. Racquel Russell scored 28 of 44 attempts and Laura Howe nine of 22 for Las Lomas, while Moore netted 28 of 35 attempts and Leslie Ann Legerton eight of 13 for Senators.
