St Vincent women whip Bajans by 29 runs
ST VINCENT earned the first victory in the West Indies Women Cricket Federation Limited-Overs competition with a 29-run triumph over Barbados in a rain-affected second round match at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva yesterday. But, as a result of heavy overnight showers, the other two matches between defending champs Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, carded for the Queen’s Park Oval; and Jamaica versus St Lucia at the Barataria Oval were abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Chasing a target of 110 runs in 27 overs, the Bajans never got any momentum going, and were restricted to 80 for seven with Rosita Browne hitting 25 while Pamela Levine made ten. Melissa Billingy and Phernell Charles each grabbed two wickets for six and 19 runs respectively while Maria Abbott, Sherry Ann John and Jennifer Charles collected one each for the Vincentians.
The match got going at 1.15 pm due to the damp conditions with both teams facing an allotment of 27 overs. The Vincentians amassed 109 for five with Vanessa Shallow topscoring with 27 while Cordell Jack added 22, Samantha Lynch an unbeaten 17 and 26 extras. Maria Burnham was the leading bowler for Barbados with two for 12 off six overs while Levine, Kyshona Knight and Kycia Knight chipped in with one apiece. Today is a scheduled rest day in the tournament, with matches resuming tomorrow.
STANDINGS — 1 St Vincent 3 pts; 2 Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, St Lucia, Jamaica 2 pts; 3 Barbados 1 pt.
