Glenn hits double for Metros

SAN JOSE: Trinidad and Tobago’s Cornell Glenn netted a double and Jamaican Fabian Taylor was also on target as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars battled to a draw with the San Jose Earthquakes in a 10-goal US Major League Soccer (MLS) thriller at Spartan Stadium on Saturday night. The match, locked at 3-3 at half time, produced four more goals after the break with Glen striking in the 90th minute to earn the MetroStars an equal share of the points. Glen, a recent signing from Caribbean Club champions San Juan Jabloteh, put the MetroStars ahead after just six minutes, the first time this season the MetroStars scored the first goal in a match.

He carried the ball down the centre and after fighting off three San Jose challengers, unleashed a shot from 22 yards that dipped out of the reach of goalkeeper Pat Onstad. US international Landon Donovan then set up goals by Brian Ching (13th) and Chris Brown (24th) that gave San Jose the lead. Joselito Vaca scored in the 25th minute to level the scores at 2-2, and after Donovan sent San Jose in front again in the 43rd minute, Taylor struck on the stroke of half time for the 3-3 scoreline. Taylor cracked a shot from 25 yards out on the right, curling it over the outstretched hand of Onstad and into the upper far corner of the goal. San Jose surged ahead 5-3 on strikes from Denmark’s Ronnie Ekelund (58th) and Craig Waibel (60th) early in the second half, but Amado Guevara pulled a goal back in the 64th minute and Glenn rallied the MetroStars to the draw with a wonderful goal.

Eddie Gaven curled in an early cross from the right, finding Glen cutting sharply at the near post.  Glen left Onstad helpless to make the stop as he stepped over the incoming ball, and flicked it past the goalkeeper on the near post with the inside of his trailing foot. Elsewhere, Grenada’s Shalrie Joseph was sent off as New England Revolution held on for a scoreless draw against the Colorado Rapids in Denver. Joseph, in his second season with the Revs, was shown a straight red card for pulling down Chris Henderson as he raced away behind the Revs defence on a clear breakaway. Jovan Kirovski scored goals eight minutes apart in the second half as the Los Angeles Galaxy ended their 17-match road winless streak with a 3-1 victory against the Dallas Burn at the Cotton Bowl.  LA had Jamaica international Tyrone Marshall in their line-up.

The Columbus Crew, behind a stoppage-time penalty kick from Ross Paule, ended a 420-minute goal-scoring drought and got a point against DC United as the teams ended in a 1-1 draw at RFK Stadium. And Botswana’s Dipsy Selolwane netted an equaliser with seven minutes remaining, to give the visiting Chicago Fire a come-from-behind 2-2 draw against the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium. Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Fire threatened early after the break as their Jamaica internationals nearly connected in the 49th minute.  Forward Damani Ralph dribbled by a defender down the right before serving Andy Williams, whose close-range shot from the top of the six-yard box was blocked by goalkeeper Tony Meola. Justin Mapp (52nd) levelled for Chigaco, before Kansas City’s Davy Arnaud (64th) and Selolwane (83rd) locked the match again with goals.  Kansas City had Jamaica international Shavar Thomas in their line-up.
