Mother’s Day hoax

THE EDITOR: If it is any consolation to Doodnath Maharaj, he is not alone in the GE doghouse. I hardly strain at the leash any more, but still cannot contain an occasional howl, especially when one editor expresses his support for US foreign policy because he fears his friends living there might be blown up as a result of those policies!

So I would advise those who went to “talk yer mind” and to address Newsday, which gives far more space to readers’ views than any other local publication, making each and everyone part o the process of the free press. Right now, the “greedy minority” are busy raking in the profits for Mother’s Day. We are being courted with ads to spend $1,000 and get a free gift, and it has become standard evening viewing for four mothers actually soliciting gifts of furniture and appliances.

This puts those with small pay-packets in a very embarrassing situation. Some are made to feel guilty and buy what they cannot afford on hire purchase, which still might not be paid for by the time Mother’s Day rolls around yet again. Mothers should not be brainwashed to expect gifts for doing what comes naturally. There are many more sincere and meaningful ways to show that one cares and appreciates her all the year round, without getting into debt for counterfeit love. As the old song said: “Little things mean a lot!”
