St Vincent women crowned cricket queens

ST VINCENT and the Grenadines wrested the West Indies Women Cricket  Championship league title with an emphatic six-wicket victory over St Lucia at Gilbert Park, California, Central Trinidad yesterday. The St Lucians posted a competitive 148-run total in 48.1 overs with Maria Deavis topscoring with 26 and Doris Francis 21.

But Juliana Nero stroked an unbeaten 63 to steer SVG to 149 for four wickets in 48.3 overs.  Cordel Jack contributed 26. At Pierre Road, Charlieville, Trinidad and Tobago also won by six wickets over Barbados to finish runners-up and must be wondering “what if” their first two matches against the new queens and Guyana were not washed out by rain. The Trinidad and Tobago girls bowled out Barbados for a paltry 100, then proceeded to score 101 for four off only 29.3 overs. Grenada scored an exciting two-wicket victory over Jamaica in the other game at Monroe Road, Chaguanas. The Jamaicans were restricted to 113 for nine wickets off their 50 overs, and Grenada replying reached 114 for eight wickets with just three balls remaining.
