Cycle championships in Arima

AFTER many years, the national cycling championships have received a sponsor. The new sponsors are Computer Power and Supplies (CPS). This year’s championships will begin at the Arima Municipal Stadium velodrome on Wednesday night with the preliminaries in both the kilometre time trial and match sprint. Cyclists will be hoping to catch the selectors fancy for the Pan Am Championships in Venezuela next month. Heat Wave Cycle Club rider Azikwe Kellar will be putting his kilo title on the line.

But there is a toss up for the sprint crown, with defending champion Clinton Grant facing a vastly improved group including Elisha Greene and Ray Phillip. Among the juniors, Christopher Sellier will be hard-pressed by arch-rival Haseem McLean to hold on to his kilo and sprint titles. Action will continue at the Arima venue on May 20 to May 23, and will shift to Chaguaramas for the 40 kilometre time trial on August 21. The criterium events will be staged around George V Park on August 22 and September 8.
