Savannah into Tamarind Square
THE EDITOR: As the question of squatting has come up once again, I think the words of Patrick Manning are very relevant. The NHA took too long to act against Union Hall squatters, and advise law enforcement agencies to help nip squatting in the bud. As is usual with any government or law enforcement agency in Trinidad, they nip nothing in the bud.
They wait ‘til things get so bad that the problem is almost impossible to correct. Just look at what is going around the Savannah. First of all, there are lots of signs in various parts of the Savannah saying no unauthorised driving or parking yet, every afternoon there are cars crossing the Savannah, which mash up the grass in areas. Have you noticed how slowly but surely the benches around the Savannah are being occupied by homeless people?
Very soon we will have a problem on our hands, and it will be too late to correct it. The vagrants will say they have been living there for more than three years and I have legal rights. See what I mean, we just leave things until they get out of hand. Is the Savannah becoming another Woodford Square or Tamarind square? The choice is ours.
