North East, Connection battle for supremacy
NORTH EAST Stars and W Connection will continue their neck-and-neck battle for supremacy, in the Senior Division of the T&T Pro League, in seventh round action today. All matches will kick off at 4 pm. Stars, who lead Connection by a superior goal difference (both teams have 13 points from six matches), will leave their Sangre Grande base and head west to the Hasely Crawford Stadium; Mucurapo to meet the youthful Defence Force; while Connection will square off against the back-to-back champs CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Balmain, Couva. The league will be suspended for two weeks due to the national senior team’s tour of Britain, where they will face Iraq on May 23 and Scotland seven days later.
Among the locally-based players who will use today’s matches as their final warm-up before departing on Tuesday are captain Angus Eve, Jabloteh team-mates Kerwyn “Hardest” Jemmott, Kerry Baptiste, Stokely Mason (all midfielders) and goalkeeper Daurance Williams; Fire’s playmaker Densil Theobald and veteran North East Stars striker Jerren Nixon. Two teams who have been in excellent form, Starworld Strikers and Arima/Morvant Fire will be looking to improve on their current positions (third and fourth respectively) when they clash at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. And, in the match-up between the cellar-placed squads, South West Drillers host Tobago United at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground.
