Nixon puts North East ahead
VETERAN national striker Jerren Nixon continued his fantastic goalscoring form, scoring two goals to give T&T Pro League leaders North East Stars a 3-1 win over Defence Force at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday. And Nixon’s pair, his 10th and 11th goals of the season, saw the Sangre Grande-based team take pole position atop the standings after joint leaders W Connection were blanked 3-0 by defending champs CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Balmain, Couva.
North East have accumulated 16 points from seven matches, with Connection next with 13 points and Starworld Strikers third with 12. But with Connection’s defeat, Starworld missed the opportunity to move to second after they were held to a goalless draw by Arima/Morvant Fire at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. At the Hasely Crawford Stadium, striker Kerwyn Coa gave the Army-Coast Guard combination a 5th minute advantage before Nixon equalised for North East in the 27th. Nixon who will travel with the national team for their two-match tour of Britain tomorrow, gave North East their first lead in the 63rd minute, and Kerwyn Newallo iced the victory with a strike in time added.
Connection managed to hold Jabloteh at bay until the 53rd minute when national Under-23 striker Devon Mitchell put the back-to-back champs in front. Mitchell will find the net again in the 65th with national captain Angus Eve sealing the victory in the 72nd. In the battle between the bottom teams, South West Drillers got their first win, a 3-0 shut out of Tobago United at Palo Seco Recreation Ground, with goals from Ashley Adams in the 4th minute, Al Sinclair after 19 minutes and Leon Mitchell in the 82nd.
