Jobs for our youths, please
THE EDITOR: Kindly allow me space in Newsday to say that I think the government isn’t doing enough to help the nation’s young unemployed youth. Although programmes like CEPEP and HYPE are good, these are only short term methods of employment. For us as a nation to reach First World developed status by the year 2020, we must have more long term methods of employment for our nation’s youth. Every year thousands of young people leave our secondary school system, qualified and even skilled, but are yet unable to secure a stable job.
It pains me as one who worked in the government service for over 30 years to see our youths so lost and frustrated at times. One suggestion that I have is for the government to consider looking at more jobs in the field of manufacturing and the role of technology like computers and networking telecommunications to help our displaced youths. I am calling on the Honourable Prime Minister and also the Minister of Labour and Man Power Resources to look into these affairs, before we as a country have a crisis on our hands which we cannot handle.
