Brave action by Mrs Gandhi
THE EDITOR: The fact that Sonia Gandhi has decided not to accept the position of Prime Minister of India after her party’s electoral success is nothing less than magnanimous. No matter her reasons, Mrs Gandhi has demonstrated that there are still persons engaged in politics who will put the interests of the nation and of the people above their own. Mrs Gandhi’s brave action has paved the way for continued stability of Indian democracy, and of course the success of the Nehru/Gandhi dynasty.
It is my hope that politicians here in Trinidad and Tobago will take a page from Mrs Gandhi and behave in a manner that is beneficial to the national interests, and not purely for the advancement for partisan interests. Manmohar Singh is tipped to become the next Indian Prime Minister. If this proves to be true, Mr Singh, as a former Finance Minister possesses the necessary experience to guide India in its continuing drive towards economic reform.
