Ways to ease Port-of-Spain traffic jams

THE EDITOR: Readers who called expressing interest in my traffic plan for Port-of-Spain —Ariapita Avenue one-way west; Western Main Road and Tragarete Road, one-way east; Richmond Street, Colville Street and Maraval Road, one-way north: Edward Street, one-way south from Tragarete Road, etc — may be interested to know that I took their advice and forwarded the suggestions to the Ministry of Works and Transport. By letter dated May 12, the Ministry said that the suggestions towards reducing traffic congestion in Port-of-Spain “have been forwarded to the Chief Traffic Engineer for consideration.” I will keep readers apprised of what happens next.

I should add that I will be contacting the Chief Traffic Engineer on the very lengthy traffic jams going west into Diego Martin every working day on afternoons. The problem is the Four Roads Junction. If Morne Coco Road were made one-way south up to a point before the St Finbar’s corner, between 4 pm and 7 pm each week day, traffic into Diego Martin would flow, and people suffering from as far back as the Stadium would be eased up. As the Ministry is planning to extend Covigne Road into Chaguaramas, it may become necessary to make that change at Four Roads permanent.
