Yorke’s future at Rovers uncertain

LONDON: English Premier League football side Blackburn Rovers yesterday rejected speculation in the British press of a supposed “pay off” for Trinidad and Tobago striker Dwight Yorke. Yet the player’s future at the club remains uncertain. Yorke, who has one year remaining on his contract, featured little for the first team in the closing weeks of the season and has since been linked with a move away from Ewood Park.

Rovers announced that they are willing to release the struggling 31-year-old if the price is right.  “While there will be no golden handshake, Rovers have reached an agreement with Yorke’s advisors that should a satisfactory offer come in, they won’t stand in his way,” the Rovers’ website reported.  Yorke’s career has been on the decline in recent years.  After his ?12.6 million signing from Aston Villa to Manchester United in 1998, Yorke enjoyed tremendous success. He was the premier league’s Carling “Player of the Year” in the 1998-99 season while notching 29 goals that helped United win the treble. He subsequently fell out of favour with United boss Alex Ferguson and was transferred to Blackburn Rovers in July 2002 for a bargain two million pounds.
