NFM open b-ball account with big win
National Flour Mills (NFM) opened their account with a convincing 67-53 win over Trailblazers in the North Zone Basketball Commission’s League competition on Monday evening. Playing at the St Paul’s Street Sport Facility, NFM, eight-time First Division title winners and defending champions, came roaring out the gates against leading 17-13 at the end of the first quarter, 36-21 at the half and 50-42 at the end of the third. Michael Worrell played a vital role for NFM in this match with three assists, one rebound and team-high 13 points. Kerry Westfield and Keston King had ten points and one rebound each with Westfield draining two threes on the way to his tally. Jason Delisle had a vital 11 with one assist and five rebounds.
The Trailblazers were determined to reverse their fortune in the evening’s second match of a double-header. Gershwin Duncan put in a worthy game-high 16 points, seven assists and two rebounds but Wendell Andrews and captain Jason Cadiz each contributed ten, Andrews with two assists and a rebound and Cadiz with three assists and two rebounds. Despite their hard work Trailblazers could not beat NFM’s determination and if they continue in this direction a ninth North Zone title could be on the cards. In the earlier Second Division match, Off Limits made a mockery of TSTT as they secured a 110-46 victory after leading 25-10 after the first period, 58-21 at the half and running away with the match as early as the third where the lead stood at 88-36. Off Limits had no problem with first match jitters and, much to the bewilderment of TSTT, fell right into the new season with fluid scoring.
The charge was signalled by Sorrell Pompey who had a match-high 23 points accompanied by three assists and a rebound. Dillon Duke followed suit with 21 points and two rebounds and assists while their efforts were cemented into place by 20 points and four rebounds from Jonathan Donawa. Both Pompey and Donawa hit a three-point shot to demonstrate their prowess within and out the arc. For TSTT Mark Langat had 16 points an assist and six rebounds and Jerome Lewis scored a three-pointer on his way to ten points an assist and six rebounds. The opening fixtures of the North Zone competition promise another exciting whirlwind season of basketball excellence characteristic of the league which has garnered the devoted following of an army of supporters.
