Women footballers aim for Thailand
MONTREAL: Trinidad and Tobago under-19 women footballers begin their quest for a berth in the FIFA World Championship in Thailand against Costa Rica at the Molson Stadium, McGill University, today. The field is set for the 2004 CONCACAF Under-19 Women’s Final Round qualification which takes place at two venues from today to June 6. The eight-team tournament in Ottawa’s Frank Clair Stadium and Montreal’s Molson Stadium (McGill University).
Two teams from this series will qualify for the 2004 FIFA Under-19 World Championship from November 10-27. No strangers to staging an Under-19 Women’s competition, Canada was the venue for the inaugural FIFA Under-19 World Championship in 2002. Canada reached the final, but dropped a 1-0 result to the USA in “golden goal” overtime. The 2004 CONCACAF Under-19 Final Round has the host, Canada, in Group A, along with Mexico, Panama and Jamaica, while the USA compete in Group B alongside Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago and Dominican Republic. This is the second time that CONCACAF has staged a qualifying event for the Under-19 World Championship the previous took place in Trinidad and Tobago in 2002.
