Carib Sunday Cricket League title shared

THIS year’s Carib Sunday Cricket League title was shared between PowerGen and Alescon Comets after their final was washed out at Gilbert Park, California, Central Trinidad, yesterday. Heavy overnight rain prevented play from starting at the scheduled 9.30 am time and the handful of spectators were kept hoping until 1.30 pm when umpires Hayden Bruce and Samuel Gibson ended their agony by declaring the ground unfit for play. Both teams walked away with $22,000 each for their efforts during the season.

Yesterday’s final was the third successive to be washed out after attempts on two occasions to play the game in April were unsuccessful. Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board of Control administrative manager Rambhai Patel said,  it was unfortunate the match could not be played to determine  a clear winner. “After all the hard work of the teams in preparing for this game, we find ourselves with three scheduled days being washed out. It is very unfortunate and it is the first time in the 11-year history of the cup that this has occurred.” PowerGen official Omar Khan said he was very disappointed by the result due to rain.

“I thought we had an excellent chance of beating Comets and taking the title but the rain in the end denied us that. “We would have liked to play the game and win in order to register our first lien on the trophy.” Azim Bassarath,  responsible for the staging of the match said, “at this time of the year we could expect such a scenario. I think that we were just unlucky not to have a final. “We had scheduled the match weeks ago and unseasonal rain interrupted the game.”
