Idiots on our highways

THE EDITOR: The latest whipping-boy in accidents is ‘defective tyres’. Poor defective tyres. Of course it is not the defective-brain drivers who are responsible for killing people on the roads, including themselves. Any sensible person who drives a car regularly checks or should check tyres along with water, gas, oil and whatever else. But not us Trinis. We prefer to drive drunk and without due care and when we hit something and die, or kill others, then the whole world is responsible, except us.

When I look at drivers who do stupid things on the highways I wonder not only about the person, but I wonder about the parents, the family he or she comes from and what kind of teaching they get. Yesterday I was on the Uriah Butler Highway on my way to Port-of-Spain, driving on the left hand side. It was about 6.30 pm and the road was almost empty. Lo and behold, a genius was overtaking on the shoulder. He overtook us on the left shoulder, went across to the right lane and then came back to the left lane only to stop on the shoulder, next to one of those eye-sores along the highway that call themselves used car parts sales companies, which are located in the swamp. What was the purpose, I ask you?

Numerous are the idiots who drive under the influence of some narcotic or plain stupidity and think that someone is being impressed with his ingenuity. I wish these fools would just spend some moments thinking (I know how hard that can be to some) about the people they affect negatively when they do antics that end up disasters.
