Where evil breeds evil

THE EDITOR: The recent kidnapping and murder of the son of Mr Nizam Baksh is appalling and the hearts of many of us go out to him and his family. The many kidnappings and subsequent murders that occur in this country today did not come about by chance. They are the result of certain behavioural patterns found in our society today even in high places. There is a paucity of ethics and honesty that plagues the land resulting in what we are experiencing today. The Scripture says, “Truth is fallen in the street and equity cannot enter.” Charges of corruption in government and other high places are in the air.

The drug trade is another cancer that appears impossible to irradicate despite honest efforts made by government and other organisations. Fighting the effect and not the cause of the crime situation cannot work. An effective solution to the crime situation in our society is to bring to justice those guilty of corruption in high places. The problem that exists in our society today is that some people deem themselves untouchable both in acts of corruption and the drug trade.

Evil breeds evil resulting in the number of kidnappings and murders we experience today. The Opposition is adding fuel to flame by not wanting to support the Government of the day in putting laws in place that would deter and bring to justice criminals having a field day. When we sow disasters and find ourselves reaping catastrophies, then we have ourselves to blame. As Goldsmith puts it, “Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey, where wealth accumulates and men decay.”
