Dwight keeps fans guessing on return
Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke made his anticipated return to training with the Trinidad and Tobago football team yesterday at a stadium named after him in Tobago. Yorke joined the training session and immediately fitted in with the rest of players as they conversed before getting down to work under coach Bertille St Clair. “Put ‘Brow’ in the goal, try and save this one ‘Brow’ “ Yorke shouted referring to former goalie Michael Maurice who is now an assistant coach with the team. There has been much speculation over Yorke’s possible return to international football and it is left to be seen if he will don the national shirt once again in tomorrow’s friendly against Northern Ireland.
Yorke later started a training match against local side Mason Hall FC and struck twice in the first half to leave TT 3-0 up at half-time. Anthony Rougier was the other scorer. “It’s obviously great to have Dwight around because we all know he can be an asset to any team. I think once he makes up is mind and is well supported he should be able to fit into the effort,” star striker Stern John said. St Clair has been talking about Yorke’s return for some time and was obviously pleased to have him back. “Dwight definitely has something to contribute still,” St Clair said. Meantime, Northern Ireland coach Lawrie Sanchez believes that his team can get the better of their opponents at Bacelot.
Sanchez and his team arrived in the sister-isle from St Kitts/Nevis on Thursday and trained yesterday . They are confident they can follow Scotland’s emphatic victory against the TT lads. It would be their second win of the tour following a 2-0 victory over the Kittitians on Wednesday. “We are very much looking forward to getting another win on Sunday because we arrived here yesterday from two good matches against Barbados and then a win over St Kitts and we are up for it,” Sanchez said yesterday. TT on the other hand are looking to rebound from the recent 4-1 loss to Scotland and according to skipper Angus Eve, they won’t be taking their opponents lightly.
Arriving in the camp on Friday was young US-College based striker, 20-year-old Darryl Roberts, formerly of Fatima College, English-born midfielder Andre Boucaud, defender Ian Cox of English side Gillingham, Wrexham’s Carlos Edwards and Birmingham City striker Stern John and utility player Anthony Rougier. Midfielder Kerwyn Jemmot also joined the squad while Tobago-based forward Hayden Fitzwilliam was invited by St Clair to train with the team. American A-League midfielder Joel Bailey will not join the team due to an injury sustained this week. Sundays feature game which kicks off at 5pm will be preceded by a match between the TT Under 17 team and a Tobago Under 17 outfit from 3pm.
