WASA, biggest wasters of water

THE EDITOR: It pains my heart to see a commodity so vital being wasted day in and day out. At the same time homes and business places (Point Fortin) are being destroyed for want of the same. What is WASA really doing? Does the authority really care about the citizens who pay rates yearly for a commodity that always seems to be in shortage for many? As a resident of Circle Drive, San Fernando, I have observed for two months, maybe more, a burst water main on the entrance to Embacadere. The water, purified and clean, is just running wastefully along the roadway, all through the street. One cannot ignore the obvious wetness of the street on blazing hot, sunny days. Sometimes as the water rises, the chlorine content is evident.

Let’s do some simple mathematics. This water flows for 24 hours non stop. If about 40 gallons of water is lost an hour I can safely say that about 1,000 gallons of clean water is lost each day. That for one month will be 31,000 gallons. Two months will be 62,000 gallons. Now let’s just say conservatively it costs five dollars to purify a gallon of water. Imagine the cost! Imagine that more water is lost than I estimated and imagine that there may be ten or 20 such leaks in the country at this time (still being conservative). What wastage! What cost! Who pays! Who suffers! WASA get serious. Fix the leaks. You are the biggest wasters of water in the country. You are located on Lady Hailes Avenue just five minutes from the leak, do you need directions. Act now our lives depend on it!
