Follow Day Flight in Irish Derby
THE trainer of Day Flight, fourth in the French Derby on Sunday last, has indicated his charge will race in the Irish Derby at The Curragh tomorrow. John Gosden thought the ground at Chantilly was a bit too fast for his horse, and because of this believes Day Flight ran a very good race to finish fourth. Vodafone Epsom Derby third Let The Lion Roar is considered by trainer John Dunlop to be unlucky. Horses recently nominated by connections as ones to look out for include: BAGO: Winner at Chantilly on Sunday last. Alan Cooper, racing manager to owners the Niarchos Family “Having had a long lay-off you can never be certain how you are going to run but I’m delighted. “The horse has class and I’m delighted he showed it today. “The good thing is that he has come back and looks as good as ever.”
DAY FLIGHT: Fourth in the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) on Sunday last. John Gosden, trainer said: “He’s run a blinder. It was just a little too quick the ground for him. “For the third race of his life it was a pretty smart run.” “He may possibly go to the Curragh (Irish Derby) but we’ll just play with him a little bit. That was only his third race in the Derby and he’s run well. “We might just box a little clever to give him a chance later in the year when there’s some cut about.” INCHENI: Winner at Newbury on Thursday. Geoff Wragg, trainer: “I’ve always liked this race because it falls between Epsom and Ascot and therefore you don’t get the Oaks or Ribblesdale fillies in it. “Incheni ran really well over an inadequate trip at Goodwood last time and she relished the extra distance today. I think we’ll keep her to a mile and a quarter and aim her at a race at Deauville.”
LET THE LION ROAR: Third in the Derby on Saturday John Dunlop, trainer: “He ran a very good race indeed and might have been an unlucky loser. “Typical Epsom, he got in behind Percussionist — who wasn’t acting — at the top of the hill, lost a lot of ground and absolutely flew home. Probably he was a bit unfortunate. “It was a great run and I’m delighted to see him produce the speed he did to come home. I think the visor helped him to concentrate. “We’d definitely take on the winner again in the Irish Derby and I think the flat track at the Curragh would suit us better.” NORTH LIGHT: Winner of the Derby on Saturday last. Sir Michael Stoute, trainer: “I would say there is a strong likelihood we will go for the Irish Derby. We will take it stage by stage with him. But he is a fine athlete, composed in every way.
“There has been progress with every race up to now. That was a pretty smart performance and it would be nice to think there might be any further improvement in him.” OUIJA BOARD: Winner of Oaks on Friday last. Ed Dunlop, trainer: “We will take it one step at a time and she isn’t in the Irish Oaks, but I would have to say that she will probably be supplemented. “After that there is the Nassau at Goodwood, but we will have to see how she is. She’s such a big filly that she was always going to do better with time and I have been very pleased with her this year.”
