Burns fails to face starter, Ashby 8th

AUSTIN: Trinidad and Tobago collegiate athletes in the United States  failed in their bid for medals at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Track and Field Championships. Fana Ashby, running in the colours of Auburn University, who broke the women national 100 metres record in finishing second in her heat on Thursday night in 11.20 seconds, could finish no better than a disappointing eighth of nine in the final in a time of 11.43 seconds.

Friday night’s race was won by Lauryn Williams in 10.96 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year for the distance.
And in the men 100 metres Marc Burns who also runs in an Auburn vest, and who clocked a wind-aided 9.99 seconds in winning his heat, failed to make it to the starting blocks. Tyson Gay gave defending champion Arkansas their first men’s 100-metre title, winning in 10.06 seconds. Michael Frater of TCU was second, also in 10.06.

Men 100 metre (final):  1. Tyson Gay (Arkansas) 10.06; 2. Michael Frater  (TCU)  10.06; 3. Mardy Scales (Middle Tennessee St.) 10.07; 4. Tyree Gailes  (Texas Tech) 10.11; 5. Demi Omole (Wisconsin) 10.15; 6. Jonathon Brown     (Western Kentucky) 10.21; 7. Anthony Buchanan (Washington State) 10.22;  8. Brendan Christian (Texas) 10.30; Marc Burns (Auburn) Did not start.
