How much tax on gas?

THE EDITOR: Could you kindly supply the answers to the undermentioned questions? I am sure that these answers would be very informative to your readership. Thanks. Over the past few weeks much publicity has been given in the media worldwide, to the increasing price of crude oil on the world market. Last week the price reached a high of US $42.50 per barrel.

How much revenue does the Government of Trinidad and Tobago receive when the price of crude oil is at US$40 per barrel on the world market?
At present in Trinidad and Tobago, Super Unleaded gasoline is sold at TT $2.70 per litre and Premium Unleaded Gasoline at TT $3 per litre. How much of these prices are Government taxes?

IAN LAMBIE

THE EDITOR: Dear Mr Lambie, thank you for your letter. The point of your question is well taken. The answer, however, can only come from the Government, specifically the Ministry of Energy. Let us hope, as a matter of public interest, they will vouchsafe to reply.
