TT’s Sun carries Olympic Torch in Los Angeles
Trinidad and Tobago Olympian Gregory Sun has carried the Olympic Flame for a short but important leg of the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay through Los Angeles (USA). “Incredible. It was such an honour to be a part of something so special,” were the first words that Sun remarked after the run on June 16. “My leg was through the Third Street Promenade in Los Angeles. All the vendors and shops on the promenade closed to cheer me on. It seemed as if all of LA came out to cheer. I can’t even begin to describe the feeling while running. It was a quick run, and I felt like I could go on forever,” he added.
Sun was one of 149 torchbearers selected to run in Los Angeles. He represented Trinidad and Tobago in the Bobsleigh competitions of the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and is currently president of the Trinidad and Tobago Bobsleigh Association. Other celebrity torchbearers in Los Angeles included Sylvester Stallone and Tom Cruise, as well as Olympians Sammy Lee, Pat McCormick, Janet Evans and Rafer Johnson. The Olympic flame’s global trek started on June 3 in Sydney, Australia. It will travel to 34 cities in 27 countries en route to the Opening Ceremony of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
