Ganpath scores at Belmont

BELMONT, New York: Trini-dadian jockey Ray Ganpath registered his second win for the week at Belmont when he captured Wednes-day’s third race aboard the favourite Heneresa. Ganpath, a stable jockey for top trainer Allen Jerkens, piloted the 3-2 choice Heneresa to a fighting win in the US$28,000 event for the Hall of Fame trainer. He had also won a US$48,000 Claiming race with Mike’s Classic, for Jerkens, on Sunday.  The three-year-old colt Heneresa was kept close to the pace by Ganpath in Wednesday’s six-furlong sprint and unleashed for a winning run entering the stretch-drive.

Ganpath engaged top jockey Aaron Gryder in a fierce stretch duel and prevailed by a neck with Heneresa — in a time of one minute 10.52 seconds — for his third win of the season.  Gryder’s mount Imprints in Gold (2-1) finished second. Ganpath is 16th in the Belmont jockeys’ standings, that is being led by John Velasquez (50), followed by Javier Castellano (35). Since arriving in the United States over three years ago, Ganpath scored his biggest win last October when he landed the US$500,000 Frizette Stakes aboard Society Selection for Jerkens. (CMC)
