‘Boboy’ snaps up S/African jockey

South African jockey Julien Gadsby will have his first classic ride in Trinidad on Saturday, when the Arima Race Club stage Day 19 of the racing season at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. The competent lightweight has plied his trade in his homeland, England, New Zealand, Australia and Barbados before showing off his skills for the first time here on June 19. And he was snapped up by astute trainer Maniram “Boboy” Maharaj to partner Melanie My Love on Saturday in the CLICO Midsummer Classic, the feature event on the Colonial Life Insurance Company sponsored 10-race card. Gadsby replaces apprentice Sheldon Rodrico aboard the daughter of Tribal Chieftain/Melanie Samantha in the 1900 metres event representing the second leg of the local triple crown.

Melanie My Love, with 16 starts to her name is the most experienced from lot of 11 three-year-olds to have stood their ground for Saturday’s Grade One event. Although her one and only victory came in the Nursery Stakes as a juvenile, her consistency saw her earning purses in 13 of her other starts, among which was a third placed finish in the Union Park Turf Club Guineas, behind Mucho Tempo and French Academy. Gadsby, who had riding commitments at the Garrison Savannah in Barbados last week will pilot two runners on the Turf for owner/trainer Harold Chadee before the main event. He will first have the leg up on Justice in the CLICO Lifetime Advantage Optional Claiming event, the second contest on the programme to have attracted 95 runners. And will then sit aboard Perfect Gem in a similar dash over 1000 for West Indian bred three-year-old maidens.
