Eastern Lions clobber Sando

JOE PUBLIC remain the team to beat in the 2004 National Super League after a convincing 6-1 trouncing of Club Sando at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna on Tuesday. The “Eastern Lions” hold a three-point edge over defending champs L-Sporto Crab Connection, who got the better of Superstar Rangers 2-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. Police are in third spot after a 3-0 triumph over Moruga at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella while WASA Clean and White earned a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Biwater Stokelyvale at the WASA Ground, St Joseph. At the Marvin Lee Stadium, Joe Public got four goals in the space of 16 minutes to lead 4-0 at the halftime interval —  Hollis Brown (19th), Devon Caseman (20th), Brian Wallace (32nd) and Roen Nelson (35th).

Anton Hutchinson got the fifth goal for the hosts in the 56th before Kevin Ollivierre got the lone strike for the Southerners in the 80th. Nelson got his second goal in the 83rd to ensure full points for Joe Public, their seventh win after eight rounds of matches. Stand-in captain Warren Butler (24th) and Marvin Oliver (37th) both converted on close-range chances, past ex-national goalkeeper Ross Russell, to earn a comfortable win for Crabs, as they seek to narrow the gap between themselves and Joe Public. Police also had an easy time against Moruga, with goals from Kelon Williams (10th), Sean McLatchie (30th) and former Trinidad and Tobago striker Dexter Cyrus (90th).

In the all-water clash at St Joseph, Stokelyvale held a 2-0 lead following strikes from Curtis Job (18th) and Michael Carrington (31st) before Daleon Sinnette trimmed the scores for WASA in the 42nd. Sinnette equalised for the hosts in the 75th minute while Darren Modeste completed WASA’s comeback when he got the winner in the 88th. Harvard stayed in fifth position after a 4-1 whipping of Medianet East San Juan United at the Mt Hope Junior Secondary School Ground. Christon Freitas got a double for Harvard, in the 22nd and 79th minutes, while Kendell Baptiste (43rd) and Kenwyn Dennis (53rd) were the other scorers for the St James-based team. Mervyn Williams was on target for San Juan in the 56th.

But the day’s most eventful match was staged at the Trinity College Grounds in Moka, where Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix overcame Maraval Youth Academy 5-4. Dennis Bruce got a hat-trick for the Tobagonians, in the 10th, 30th and 41st, while Dominic Kerr added a double, in the 22nd and 64th minutes. Sherwin Waldron (19th), Seon Jack (50th), Shaton Ollivierre (56th) and Wesley Noreiga (75th) were on target for Maraval. In the day’s other match, Caroni eased past Carib 3-1 at Brechin Castle, Couva. Randy Weston netted a pair for Caroni, in the sixth and 61st minutes, while Ahmed Mohammed got the other in the eighth. Billy Dee Scantlebury got the consolation item for Carib in the 66th.
