Congrats to principal of Grant Memorial

THE EDITOR: This year’s success in the SEA examinations at Grant Memorial Presbyterian School is indeed a fitting tribute to the outgoing principal Mr Lennox Sirjuesingh. Mr Sirjuesingh is well known in the sports arena as having the distinction of being the first FIFA referee in the Caribbean to officiate at a World Cup game. In 1999, he was awarded the Medal Of Merit for outstanding work in sports and community development. In the eight years that Mr Sirjuesingh served at Grant Memorial, he led one of the most vibrant parent/social organisations. This union resulted in an after school arts programme which is second to none and included disciplines such as violin, modern and Indian dance, tassa and tabla drumming and steelpan just to name a few.

Grant Memorial’s annual concert, received tumultuous applause from many distinguished persons including the Honourable Minister of Education. The school’s infrastructure was enhanced with the construction of an air conditioned library and computer lab. The construction of a new wing housing 17 new classrooms alleviated the long existing problem of overcrowding at the school. In a time when violence in schools seems to continue unabated, solutions are flowing in from all quarters and include the re-introduction of “licks.” I would like to suggest that persons such as Mr Sirjuesingh, whose experience and vision have made positive inroads in education, be deployed in some meaningful way in a bid to solve this ailment which plagues us. On behalf of all the parents, teachers and students of Grant Memorial I wish Mr Sirjuesingh many years of blissful retirement.
