Arima Hawks swoop on Solo t-tennis women’s crown

ARIMA HAWKS lifted the women’s team crown with a 3-2 win over Gladiators as the Solo National Table Tennis Championships served off at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, Mucurapo yesterday. In the first match of the duel, Aleena Edwards of Gladiators got past Crusaders’ Linda Partap 15-13, 11-8, 12-10 before Natalie Montes levelled the tie with a 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 11-8 win over Astra Edwards. Verna Edwards, mother of Aleena and Astra, thrashed Nicolette Prince 11-2, 11-2, 11-3 but Montes overcame a tough challenge from Aleena to prevail 11-8, 12-14, 11-5, 12-14, 11-7.

In the decider, Astra was no match for Partap as the Gladiators’ server won 11-7, 11-8, 11-4. Montes and Partap will square off against Verna and Aleena Edwards in the women’s doubles final on Wednesday night. Montes and Partap turned back Shelly-Ann Wilson and Marilyn Lewis 11-9, 11-8, 12-14, 11-8 while the Edwards mother-daughter duo crushed sisters Priya and Nirvetta Ramcharan 11-4, 11-5, 11-9. And Solo Crusaders swept Patna 3-0 in one men’s team semi, with Dyanand Maharaj whipping Sanga Quamina 11-7, 11-4, 11-9; Courtney Pugh defeating Khellon Roach 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7 and Anthony Brown hammering Michael Noel 11-3, 11-4, 11-3. Action continues from 9 am today with matches in the men’s, women’s, boys and girls singles.
