Laventille elder says ‘No march’ in the area

ONE of the Laventille elders has said there will be no march in the Laventille area as was reportedly intended by the Hindu Credit Union (HCU). In a statement yesterday, “Thunderbolt” Williams said, “There will be no march through Laventille as proposed by agents of persons seeking to use the area for purposes other than legitimate concerns for crime, the social turmoil and the need for long-term employment and development.” HCU last week reportedly stated its intention to march through the area.

Williams insisted that such a march has to have the full support of the community, and he must know beforehand the agenda. He said “those laying claim to influence and authority in Laventille are mere opportunists who are prepared to sacrifice the development of the area at the altar of ego and greed and personal interest.” Williams added that he was confident that Government was pursuing a programme of social reform to address issues in the community. He also noted that there were other organisations and institutions in Laventille that are better equipped to address problems there.
