Joe Public retake ‘Super’ lead

JAMAICAN striker Roen Nelson continued his prolific goal-scoring form, netting a hat-trick to guide “Eastern Lions” Joe Public to a 4-0 triumph over Harvard at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva. With Friday’s victory, Joe Public climbed back to the top of the National Super League with 29 points, one more than defending champs L-Sporto Crab Connection, who were scheduled to meet Biwater Stokelyvale in the first match of a doubleheader at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago yesterday.

Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix were due to oppose Medianet East San Juan United in the other match at Bacolet. At the Couva venue, Nelson found the back of the net in the ninth, 56th and 68th minutes — the latter from the penalty spot, while fellow forward Brian Wallace got the other in the 61st. Police remained in third spot after they defeated Caroni 3-1 at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. Neri Joseph struck twice for the lawmen, in the fifth and 89th minutes, while former national striker Dexter Cyrus scored in the 74th, with Randy Weston getting the lone item for Caroni in the 50th. WASA Clean and White showed no sympathy on Moruga at the WASA Ground, St Joseph, as they hammered the Southerners 7-2. Striker Darren Modeste registered a beaver-trick in the space of four minutes — 66th, 70th, 71st and 75th minutes, while Kevin Joseph got a double in the 18th and 90th. Kirth Hutchings opened the scoring for WASA after two minutes of play. Scoring for Moruga were Marcus Emmanuel, in the 72nd, and Dameon Hamilton in the 82nd.

Superstar Rangers were also in a no-nonsense mood on Friday, crushing Maraval Youth Academy 5-0 at the Trinity College Ground, Moka, Maraval. Jason Charles notched a double for Rangers, in the 16th and 28th minutes, while Stephon Morris (15th), Chem McFarlane (27th) and Kwesi Gomez (79th) got one apiece. And Carib remained rooted at the bottom of the standings after a 4-1 drubbing by Club Sando at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna. Akil Belfon (17th) and Darren Carter (18th) gave Sando a 2-0 lead before Yosif Ramlogan trimmed the scores in the 23rd.  Sando restored their two-goal advantage courtesy of an own goal in the 78th while Kevin Ollivierre completed the scoring ten minutes from time.
