TT 4x100 women fourth

DESPITE setting their second national junior record in as many days, the Trinidad and Tobago 4x100 metre relay team finished fourth in yesterday’s final, on the last day of the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Grosseto, Italy. Running out of lane four, the quartet of Jurlene Francis, Wanda Hutson (who placed fourth in the 100m final), Monique Cabral and 200m fourth-place finisher Kelly-Ann Baptiste crossed the finish line in 44.14 seconds, eclipsing the mark of 44.29 which they made in Saturday’s semifinal round.

Gold medallist in the 200m Shalonda Solomon anchored the American 4x100m team to gold in a new world junior record time of 43.49 as she ran a superb final leg overtaking Schillonie Calvert of Jamaica and Nelly Banco of France who had both been handed the baton before the American. Jamaica was second in 43.63 while France finished third in 43.68.
