Tannis wins battle of the coaches in All Star b-ball
TEAM “B” coached by Anthony Tannis on Sunday emerged victorious in an All Star match organised by the North Zone of the Basketball Federation at St Paul’s Street in Port-of-Spain. Female stars Rachel Thompson with 16 points and Pietra Gay (15), both of Courts Horizon Club dominated the scoring as defeated Team “A”, coached by Clement “Jovi” Holder, last season’s outstanding coach were beaten 84-67. Gershwin Duncan of Trailblazers fell comfortably into the supporting role with 13 points for the winners.
Shorn Edwards of National Flour Mills (NFM) scored 14 points, Kurt Christian of Celtics put in 12 and Jason Delisle scored 10 for the losers. The earlier match dipped into the past glory days and brought out the talents of the North and East Zone Veterans for an equally entertaining match-up which was won by the East, 60-57. Probably keen on schooling the youngsters on what a real All Star looked like, Ian Gomes, Dereck James and Patrick “KK” Joseph stormed the court and the North defence, scoring 18, 15 and 10 points respectively. Gomes and James also sank two three-pointers while Trevor McLeod hit four of his own totalling 12 points from beyond the three-point arc. Lennox Sobers had nine points to his name.
On Saturday, Second Division Cosmic Raptors beat NFM 76-73. They were led by Jarvin Anderson (17) with Travis Mc Intosh and Errol Vialva contributing 13 each. For NFM, Kieran Hagley scored a match-high 18 points while Kerrin Haynes and Owen Beard both had 11 each. Detour Shak Attack beat Trailblazers 88-73 in their First Division fixture with Reynold Hospedales scoring a match-high 22. Kenneth Hinds (21) and Terrance Myers (13) topped the winners; while Jason Cadiz, 17, Marvin Samuel, 13, and Keyon Edwards, 11, scored for the ‘Blazers. Kerry Westfield scored a team-high 20 points, Jason Delisle had 18, Kerry Joseph hit 12 and Shorn Edwards made 11 to help NFM beat Celtics 97-72 in the third match on Saturday. Kurt Christian scored a match-high 21 points including eight rebounds, two assists, three-pointers and blocks in his valiant effort. Joseph Cox had 14 points at the final whistle and Andre Alexander put in 10 points two blocks and six rebounds.
