Courts women beat Army basketballers

MATCHES in the  North Zone basketball competition provided two thrilling finishes at the St Paul’s Street Sport Facility in Port-of-Spain. In the opening Women’s First Division match, Courts Horizon, fielding a team of North Zone All-Star players, beat Defence Force 65-61 as Pietra Gay scored a match-high 23 points and provided seven assists. Her effort was helped by Chezelle Griffith who put in 19 points and held 13 rebounds while  Rachael Thompson scored 10 and grabbed 14 rebounds. For the beaten Defence Force who, earlier in the week, crushed Trailblazers 72-51, Alicia Liverpool put in 22 points and had 17 rebounds while Nakida Mc Sween returned 17 points, gave four assists and collected seven rebounds.


In the second match, a Men’s First Division clash, Royal Extra Lions beat Republic Bank Arrows 74-72 after trailing 43-36 at the half and 60-56 before the fourth quarter. Arrows’ Preston Collingwood scored a match-high 18 points, hitting five three-pointers in the process while Karim Mohammed had 14 points and four rebounds. Karvis Julien contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Lions responded with Ronald Hernandez scoring 15 points, including five three-pointers, and eight rebounds while David Burton scored 11 points and took six rebounds.
