PowerGen to offer Lequay schol
POWER Generation Company of Trinidad and Tobago (PowerGen) will award the Alloy Lequay Administrative scholarship next year as a token of appreciation for the master administrator and chief executive of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB). This announcement was made by PowerGen chief executive officer (CEO) of Garth Chatoor at the TTCB’s 48th annual prize distribution ceremony at Centre Pointe Mall, Chaguanas, yesterday.
He said: “Mr Lequay has done exemplary work for this nation in terms of administration and we must celebrate people like this. “I will like to inform you all that from next year we at PowerGen will be awarding the Alloy Lequay Administrative Scholarship in recognition of the outstanding performance of this gentleman.” Chatoor also delivered the feature address and had the large gathering glued to their seats during his discourse on West Indies cricket. In a no nonsense manner he said straight off that he thinks there is no excuse for the West Indies cricket team not being the best fielding team in the world. “Where else in the world kids pelt each other for fun? Where else in the world kids would pelt down green mango and try to catch it while eluding the stone?.
“This tells me that we should have the best fielders in the game and there is no excuse for not being so. “Our batting and bowling may take a little time to settle down but right now we need to have top fielders to help our cause.” Chatoor said that kids are now born under a different Caribbean sun and whereas before www meant Weekes, Worrell and Walcott, it is known to the children as the world wide web. “While sitting down and drafting this address a chilling thought ran through my mind. I remembered that in two years time the famous ‘Jean and Dinah’ calypso will record 50 years on the scene. “How many of our kids really appreciate songs like this, which is so important as part of our heritage. I wondered why are we going to try and protect pieces like these when a little later down the road it will be completely out of the minds of the young generation. “What are we going to hear in the future when we attend a back in times party. The kids of today are different and we must work with them to mould good individuals or else we are in trouble.
I want to introduce you to the Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 team and here are a group of youngsters who are on the right path and doing their bit to make this country proud. “We are now in the age of the internet and the DVD’s and imagine just when some of us are now trying to master the video player. “These are fast times and we must take charge of the youths or else we are not going to have good things to be cheerful about.” Chatoor said: “West Indies cricket continues to be in the doldrums because the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) are ignoring the most modern technology that is necessary in today’s game for the players to be competitive. “They have far too long snubbed the use of the technology and while the game in the region continues to suffer, there is quarrel and confusion about who have the right formula to get us out of this predicament. “The WICB have to get together with all stake holders and work closely with them to improve the game because we are slipping and slipping very fast.”
