Williams wins Angostura award
WEST INDIES and Trinidad and Tobago woman cricketer Nelly Williams was awarded the Angostura Youth Award for Sports. Williams, currently in England playing league cricket with Lancashire Women’s Cricket Club, was a top performer for the West Indies team during their tour of India and Pakistan earlier this year. She was also a pillar of strength for Trinidad and Tobago at the Caribbean championships held here recently. Williams, the second female cricketer from the Caribbean to play league cricket in the UK, began playing the game competitively with Merry Girls Cricket Club in 1999.
Next season she was fast tracked into the senior national team and made her regional debut in St Vincent in January. Good performances as an opening batswoman caught the eyes of the West Indian selectors and the right hander was chosen to play against Lancashire the same year. Her West Indian career took on greater heights last year when she was chosen to play against the touring Sri Lankans. Later that year she topped the West Indies batting averages at the World Cup qualifiers in Holland.
It is now history that the West Indies qualified for the finals to be played next year in South Africa. Williams’ maturity as a cricketer has grown considerably, and she was made vice-captain of the Trinidad and Tobago team at the recent regional tournament. To date Williams enjoys a best score of 70 and her top bowling figures read four for 41.
