Need for unity in helping disabled

THE EDITOR: It is said that humans, no matter what, must be treated with some form of respect, and this concept still holds validity. If equity is to stand out as far as respect is concerned, then life has a sound meaning, and will serve to protect all the good that prevails in society today. Now, it is very important that we all look at the way in which we respond when we are placed in a position of reciprocity. I find it difficult to understand that, when the time comes for someone to say thanks, a sad refusal pops up. Why is this? Well, let me delve sharply into the reason, which troubles me. A section of the disabled community staged a protest for 116 days about one year ago, to develop a level of consciousness in the society, as it pertains to equality.

To my mind, the venture was a success, manifested in the way that the country now views the disabled as a people, with a plan to make their presence felt. However, as an advocate for the disabled, I must remark that the percentage of persons, who obtained victory as a result of that protest, was very small. Yet, how many openly said thanks to the relevant authorities? I am not sure. Why must the ones who return to give praises be in the minority? Another concern is the fact that dependability must be something of the past — no longer must the State be the sole provider for any contributions. A serious approach must be presented by organisations, in order to obtain assistance when needed. This will indeed create full support. But, the solution would only come about by a collective demonstration of unity.

All the various agencies that provide support services and aid in the development of disabled persons must work towards being seen as one body, generating positive contributions to fill the vacuum that exists. No way can the prospects of victory conquer the present situation without a collective force. Togetherness is the key to faith! For without the cohesive front displayed at the 116-day protest, its purpose would have been in vain. To heal the disability that is so cancerous in our society today, the interjection must be flooded with love and togetherness. I, alone, cannot lobby for the cause of the disabled. But, as an umbrella agency, we can come together and provide the solution. The disabled population needs to emulate the words of calypsonian, Almanac: “We have to build a better world.” This will only come about with positive words of thanks.

The solution to any problem is clear and powerful thoughts. To those who wish to remedy the fragmentation that exists among the supporting agencies, please revisit your present modus operandi, and act now! Form an umbrella agency which, in turn, will help to solve the problems that could be avoided. It is not too late! To all those who were successful and gained from the protest, come back and be role models to those who are aspiring, as the circle of life has value. So, by revisiting where you came from, you are sure to inspire those who are now where you once were. Do not act like the ten lepers who were healed, and only one returned to give thanks! A good example needs to be shared, to ensure the future has powerful pillars to rely on. If the pillars are weak, then the building or structure will crumble and fall.

To Mr George Daniel, Chairperson of the Disabled People’s International — congratulations on all your accomplishments, especially as they relate to your leadership! But, please remember that, to effect real leadership, your goal must be to bring all active organisations connected to the disabled issue under one heading — this will surely be a step in the right direction. The old saying: “Rome was not build in a day” is so true. But, if you toss enough mud at a wall, some will eventually stick! It is imperative that we remember that only the visual struggle is over! The mental and internal struggles continue. For the dependency syndrome comes from within. If you can show where you are coming from, then where you are going will be better supported. Victory will come to those who have faith! For, faith is the only way. In the spirit of growth.
