Nelson hat-trick guides Lions

ROEN NELSON maintained his prolific goal-scoring form with a hat-trick to guide Joe Public to a comfortable 5-1 win over Medianet East San Juan United at the Mt Hope Junior Secondary Ground. Tuesday’s win gave Joe Public, the “Eastern Lions,” a five-point lead over nearest rival L-Sporto Crab Connection, who were held to an exciting 3-3 draw by Police at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. Nelson put Joe Public ahead after seven minutes before Dexter Joslyn equalised for San Juan in the 21st. Nelson restored the Lions’ lead in the 30th, while Wolfrey Wolfe and Carlington Smith further widened the gap with goals in the 59th and 67th respectively. Nelson will then complete his hat-trick 15 minutes from time.

At Marabella, Jason Boodram opened the scoring for Police in the sixth minute but Crabs responded with goals from Kirston Graham (10th), Irvin Trim (38th) and Marlon Warner (60th). The lawmen never gave up hope, and earned a share of the points following strikes from Kurt Danclair (70th) and Raymond Roach (83rd). Biwater Stokelyvale moved to the fourth spot on the standings after a 4-1 whipping of Club Sando in the second match of a double-header at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet. Curtis Job netted a double, in the 27th and 85th minutes, while Kerron Phillips (eighth) and Jamon Quashie (32nd) got one apiece for Stokelyvale; Marlon Lewis pulled one back for Sando in the 58th.

In the earlier encounter, Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix trounced Moruga 6-1 —  Dominique Kerr got a pair, in the 75th and 83rd minutes, with one each from Sean Christmas (34th), Kayode Legall (64th), Kevin Keith (76th) and Steffon Hector (90th), after Carlos Nathaniel put Moruga ahead in the 26th. And Kyle Cupid scored twice, in the 16th and 49th minutes, to guide Caroni to a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Harvard at Brechin Castle, Couva. Two matches, which were due to take place on Tuesday, were rescheduled —  Maraval Youth Academy will face cellar-placed Carib at the Trinity College Ground, Moka on Saturday while Superstar Rangers oppose WASA Clean and White at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on September 21.
